THE YALTA CONFERENCE
Meeting near the end of WWII - big 3 meet to discuss post war Europe
Germany will be divided, controlled by the Allies
Liberated Eastern European countries will have new elections
United Nations will be formed
USSR is given great influence over Eastern Europe, and new government must be "Soviet freindly"

As what was becoming as the Korean War, the United States appealed to the United Nations. to stop the communist move into South Korea
16 nations provided soldiers for a UN force

THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE
- this promised aid to people struggling to resist threats to democratic freedom
- They wanted to make sure that communism did not spread
- they used cash to make sure they do
not get taken over by communist
countries (like in Greece)
THE MARSHALL PLAN
Hoping to prevent the spread of communism, the United States came up with a plan to revive the war-torn economics of Europe. The plan was named for Truman's Secretary of State, George C. Marshall.
The Marshall Plan offered 13 billion in aid to western and southern Europe.
The plan helped the nations of Europe rebuild

THE BERLIN BLOCKADE AND AIRLIFT
- Germany was separated into four parts which the countries France, Great Britain, the US, and Soviet Union help.
-France, Great Britain, and US came together forming west Germany and STalin thought that this would threaten the Oviet Union
- his forces blocked access to Berlin and so for a year, British and US cargo planes came in with supplies for residents in the city
- Stalin decided to call off the blockade
NATO AND THE WARSAW PACT
- Canada the US and western European nations created the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
- the SOviet Union and Eastern European countries formed the Warsaw Pact

THE RED SCARE, THE ROSENBERGS, AND HUAC
- Red Scare was the fear of communism that occurred twice during the 20th century
-this happened once after World War I and also in the late 1940's and early 1950's
- Rosenburg trial was when a man who was an engineer was accused of being a Russian spy providing information to the Russians about the atomic bomb
-he was sentenced to death and a friend, Sobell, was sentenced to 30 years in prison
-the HAUC (House Un-American Activities COmmittee) were anticommunists
- the targeted famous people and suspected them for communists- they made lists called black lists and if your name was on them, your career was over
COMMUNISM IN CHINA - the movement of UN forces in North Korea threatened China so they warned UN not to, who ignored it
- The Chinese pushed the UN back to South Korea
- General MacArthur wanted to bomb and blockade China but Truman wouldn't let him fearing the Soviet UNion would come and make a bigger problem
- MacArthur tried to gain more support but Truman ended up firing him
-when MAcArthur came home, his followers treated him like a hero.

- they had a missile powerful enough to hit the US
- THe US sent a spy plane to the SOviet Union and it was captured
